Celebrating 60 Years of Education

In 2016, Lavalla Catholic College has had the privilege of Celebrating 60 Years of Marist Education in partnership with Brigidine & Presentation Sisters. We have marked the occasion in many ways throughout the year, such as:

  • The annual Champagnat Mass where Mr Mike Hansen addressed the School and Community with a beautiful reflection of the past 60 years. You can view the power point, here and read the speech here
  • A Music Concert that saw past and present students perform. This was a wonderful event that saw over 300 people in attendance. Mr Shane Reid address the crowd and gave a reflection of the Lavalla Music Program. You can read the speech here.
  • Heritage Plaques have been placed throughout the school to highlight our historical buildings. You can view these plaques here.
  • A Mass which saw many past students and staff attend. Details on this historic event is below.

On Friday 9th of September, we celebrated a Mass to commemorate 60 Years of Marist Education in partnership with Brigidine and Presentation Sisters.

Below is an edited version of Mr John Freeman, Principal of Lavalla Catholic College’s welcome address.

‘We gather at today’s Mass to celebrate 60 Years of Marist Education in partnership with the Brigidine and Presentation Sisters. This is a time to remember and thank all of who have contributed over the years to all the schools that have contributed to our story.

The constant throughout this time has been a Marist spirituality, first with the Marist Fathers and then the Marist Brothers, but Catholic Secondary Education in the Latrobe Valley has been greatly enriched by the Brigidine Sisters at Kildare College and the Presentation Sisters at Presentation College.

In brief over the last 60 years we have seen five identifiable schools and four Charisms move together to become Lavalla Catholic College, a school now governed by the Marist Brothers.

St Paul’s College
Marist Fathers from 1956 to 1961, then Marist Brothers from 1962 until 1988.

Kildare College
Brigidine Sisters from 1958 to 1988.

Presentation College
Presentation Sisters from 1951 – Starting at St Kieran’s Primary – with Presentation College beginning in August 1955 to 2001.

Lourdes College
In the care of the Marist Brothers and Brigidine Sisters, 1979 to 1988.

Catholic Regional College

Also joining us today are a number of past students, including those who were here on our first day, school captains from a number of the schools in our history, former staff and past parents. You are all very welcome and we all are graced by your presence.

Whilst it is very good to acknowledge those who have made significant contributions in our past and to remember our history, as this informs us about who we are today – because we are today the sum of all the stories of our past. It is also important that we, who are here today – the current students, staff and parents – appreciate that we are right now creating new stories, that will enrich Lavalla Catholic College for others to benefit from in the future.

Hence it is good for us all to gather today around the table.’
